Frequently Asked Questions About the Rental Gardens
Where are the Waukesha County Rental Gardens Located?
The Extension Waukesha County Rental Gardens does not have an address but are located on Northview Road in Waukesha, East of Grandview Boulevard and West of Pewaukee Road (just west of the Waukesha County Expo Grounds). The Gardens share the driveway with the Waukesha County Huber Facility. The address for the Huber Facility is: 1400 Northview Rd, Waukesha, WI 53188. The Huber Facility (red brick building) has County Signage at the entrance off Northview Road (there is no signage for the gardens). When driving down the driveway, the Huber Facility will be on the right and the Rental Gardens will be on your left. Look for the bulletin board at the Rental Gardens entrance.
How large are the Plots?
Garden plots are 20’ by 20’ and 30’ by 30’. Plot sizes are approximate. Some may be wider or shorter (i.e. 22′ by 18′) or thinner and longer (i.e. 19′ by 21′).
What does it cost to rent a garden plot and what does the fee include?
The fees are $55 for a 20’ by 20’ plot and $75 for a 30’ by 30’ plot. Fees offset the costs of water, the port-a-potty, and plowing the regular garden plots.
How do I get on a waiting list to rent a plot?
To get on the waiting list, fill out the Google Form on our website at www.waukeshacounty.gov/uwex/hort/rg or call the Extension Waukesha County office at (262) 548-7775. Open garden plots are offered to those on the waiting list in order of when they were added. The sooner your name is on the list, the better your chance of getting a garden plot.
When will I be notified that a garden plot is available for me to rent?
Current gardeners have the option of keeping their plot each year. In late March we know how many and which plots have become available. Those on the waiting list are contacted via email to if they are still interested in renting a garden plot and if they are, we send registration materials.
When does the garden open and close each year?
Gardens are scheduled to open the third Saturday in May (weather permitting). The Gardens close at 9 a.m. the third Monday of October.
Are there rules to follow at the Waukesha County Rental Gardens?
Yes. There are rules which are provided to gardeners each year. The rules also provide information that may answer any additional questions. To view the rules, visit our website at www.waukeshacounty.gov/uwex/hort/rg.
Is there water provided on site?
Yes. There are six water connection sites at the Gardens. Each site has one connection for a hose and one short hose for filling buckets/watering cans. (Sprinklers and soaker hoses are not allowed.)
Are there plots to rent so I would be able to grow things such as rhubarb, asparagus, garlic, or berries?
Yes. There are 47 “permanent” gardens available for rent. Permanent just means they are not tilled each year. When a permanent garden becomes available, we use the waiting list to rent the plot.
What can I grow in the garden?
Garden plots can be used to grow vegetables, fruits, and flowers.
Are there organic plots available?
We have a limited number of organic garden plots available in “ROW D” of the Gardens.
