Volunteer Roles

4-H Volunteer Roles

Adult volunteers are essential to the 4-H program. Volunteers put 4-H’s researched-based, learn-by-doing model in action. They help youth learn and practice skills such as problem solving, decision making, and communicating – skills crucial for their success in school, careers, and communities. Adult volunteers have fun while making a positive impact on the youth in Waukesha County. All volunteers must enroll annually for the 4-H year which runs September 1 through August 31.

Activity/Event Volunteer

Activity and event volunteers provide leadership/organization for an activity or event and/or participate as a committee member.

Adult Advisor/Chaperone

Adult advisors and Chaperones work with a team of adult advisors and 4-H Youth Development staff to ensure youth have a safe and positive educational experience. State level experiences may include: Citizenship Washington Focus, Space Camp, National 4-H Congress. Chaperones for 4-H youth development experiences must be over 21 years of age (for some experiences, adults must be over 25).

Club Enrollment Coordinator

Club enrollment coordinators provide leadership for members and adult volunteers who are enrolling in the club or group organization.

Club Leader

Club leaders provide leadership to the club and includes Club leaders, Co-organizational Leaders, Co-General Leaders, Organizational Leaders, and General Leaders.

Committee Volunteer

Committee volunteers provide leadership for a committee and/or participate as a member of a committee. Committees in Waukesha County include Promotion & Events, Awards, Camp, Finance/Fundraising, Food Stand, Leadership, and Expansion & Review.

Project Leader

Project leaders provide leadership and organization to the project group who is learning about a specific topic. For example: photography, arts, foods, community service, rocketry and robotics, gardening, rabbits, dairy, etc.

Specialized Volunteers

Specialized volunteers are those who may have a special skill, interest, or passion they want to share with young people through 4-H, but they don’t want to make a long-term commitment to volunteering with the organization. They may only wish to participate one or two times. That’s okay! 4-H welcomes those who may have limited time to share with young people. (Volunteers who wish to participate more than twice, must complete the volunteer enrollment process.)

A few things one-time volunteers may need to know:

  • Adult helpers or guest speakers must be paired with at least one currently enrolled 4-H volunteer who has been trained and approved through the Grow Green training.
  • Preparation process. Depending on the number of youth participating, you may need to work with multiple 4-H volunteers.
  • Positive youth development is the goal of 4-H programs. If you share content knowledge and expertise, the positive youth development goal is building life skills, such as understanding self and others, communicating, decision making, responsibility, and others.
  • Safety and risk management are a top priority in 4-H programs. If you have questions or concerns about the safety of the setting where you are volunteering, you are encouraged to speak with a staff person or enrolled volunteer.

If, after one or two experiences volunteering with 4-H, you decide that you would like to continue volunteering with the organization, you must become a volunteer by completing the volunteer enrollment process.
