Volunteer Enrollment

Volunteer Enrollment

Adult volunteers are essential to the 4-H program and they contribute their time in a variety of ways. They help youth learn and practice skills such as problem solving, decision making, and communicating – skills crucial for their success in school, careers, and communities. Volunteers have fun while making a positive impact on the youth in Waukesha County. All volunteers must enroll annually for the 4-H year which runs September 1 through August 31.

Step One: Review the Volunteer Role Descriptions

There are six different volunteer roles within 4-H. Volunteers may serve in multiple roles. Review each role below:

Step Two: Enroll/Re-enroll in Extension Waukesha County 4-H using 4-H Online

4-H is proud of being a proactive, youth-serving organization with an excellent reputation for providing a healthy and safe environment for its members. All 4-H active volunteers must complete the Volunteer Application Form on 4-H Online. When you log in to enroll/re-enroll, you’ll be able to complete your 2025-26 Volunteer Training right in your 4-H Online profile — no extra links or websites needed! Prefer a paper version? No problem — just reach out to Extension Waukesha County office, and we’ll get one to you. Click below to be taken directly to 4-H Online or click on the resources button for more information. For project leaders, please select if you are a club or countywide leader and include the project in 4-H Online.

Step Three: Complete Screening/Trainings

Below is a list of the required screening and training for all volunteers. The new training combines all youth protection requirements into one annually updated module. It helps you/us stay compliant and allows county educators to quickly verify that compliance—saving time, reducing ambiguity, and most importantly, helping keep youth safe.  The new re-enrollment deadline also helps prevent unintended gaps in your volunteer status. That’s important because, as an approved volunteer, you’re covered under Wisconsin’s State Self-Funded Liability Program when acting within your role. Gaps in enrollment can mean lapses in that coverage and missed reminders about best practices that help reduce risk.

  • Background Check – A successful background check is mandatory for all volunteers every two years. If you are due for a background check 4-H Online will prompt you to start the process when you re-enroll. UW-Madison Division of Extension’s background check vendor is HireRight. Volunteers receive an email with a link to complete the background check directly from HireRight. (Be sure to check your spam folder.)
  • New Volunteer Training Process: You can take the training when you log in to enroll/re-enroll, you’ll be able to complete your 2025-26 Volunteer Training right in your 4-H Online profile — no extra links or websites needed! Prefer a paper version? No problem — just reach out to the Extension Waukesha County office, and we’ll get one to you or from your profile in 4-H Online in the Training Tab.
  • For additional information on the new volunteer process and required volunteer trainings, view the 2025-2026 4-H Volunteer Enrollment guide. For
  • Important Deadlines: According to our updated Wisconsin 4-H volunteer re-enrollment policy:
    • Enrollment is due by November 1st.
    • Complete all required trainings and background checks (if needed) by December 1st.

These steps are required for you to be an approved volunteer. If they’re not completed on time, you will not be allowed to lead programming with 4-H youth until everything is up to date. We truly appreciate your commitment to creating safe, positive spaces for our youth. Getting your re-enrollment done early helps make sure all our programs are supported by approved, ready-to-go volunteers like you!
